WHY EHS TEACHER TRAINING?
EHS Pilates Institute's vision for Teacher Training
At EHS, we believe that Pilates education begins with a deep understanding of anatomy, kinesiology, posture, and basic bio-mechanics. That is why EHS Pilates teacher training programs begins with Pilates Mat and Functional Anatomy, a module focusing a great deal on the fundamentals. EHS Pilates uses the fundamental exercises not only as an introduction to the Pilates repertoire but also as a teaching tool to reveal clients’ postural habits and muscular imbalances. From the first hour of working with a client, a Pilates instructor should be analyzing and actively involved in the particularities of the individual client’s body. At EHS Pilates Institute, it's our goal to teach instructors-in-training to develop their eye, to be able to see the particular needs of their clients, and to apply specific exercises accordingly rather than put clients through a “Pilates protocol”. At EHS Pilates Institute, we are committed to teaching students the overarching applications of all the Pilates exercises, most importantly the contraindications, so that when students graduate they are confident that they can apply their Pilates knowledge to all populations.
Our programs offer in-depth study of the Pilates Method with step-by-step training by master teachers, hands on practice teaching with supervision, and fully equipped studios available to teachers-in-training.
2 locations to choose from: SF or Brooklyn
Instruction Teacher trainings are taught by Ellie Herman and other certified Pilates instructors who have gone through the “TTIP” (Teacher Training Instructor Program, a rigorous educational training program led by Ellie.)
Observation
At EHS, we allow students a unique opportunity to observe experienced trainers at work. Observation will reinforce the material being presented in the teacher training modules and offer perspective on how to put it all together, taking into the account the needs of each individual client. Students are welcome to observe at other studios pending approval.
Self practice
Students are required to complete self-practice sessions to reinforce the material being presented and to perfect their technique. Students who choose to do their practical hours at EHS will workout with partners and must pay the Studio Use Fee.
Teaching
A critically important aspect of the program is learning how to be a safe, effective and inspiring teacher. Intensive students who choose to do their teaching hours at EHS may begin as soon as their Instructors grant permission, and will follow the format listed below:
Student Teaching Hours
While students are honing their skills they will see clients at a drastically reduced rate (just enough to cover studio costs). These hours are unpaid and based on studio availability.
Group Class Assistant Hours (no guaranteed availability to August Intensive students)
A special opportunity available only to those participating in the Full Certification Program, students will assist experienced trainers with their group classes. Students will learn important skills, gain confidence and become integrated into the studio.
Apprentice Teacher Hours
After completing the Student Teaching hours, students can audition to become an Apprentice Teacher at EHS based on availability,or any fully equipped Pilates studio. These additional hours are an important part of transitioning from a student to an experienced professional. If hired at EHS, you will be paid for these hours.
Comprehensive Teacher Training Program: $3800 (most popular choice!)
To complete the Comprehensive Teacher Training program, you must complete all the module requirements (see below) which total to 800 hours and are broken down: 108 hours instruction, 72 hours of observation, 220 self-practice hours, plus 400 teaching hours.
Modular Training
All our teacher trainings are now modular, meaning you can study the different modes of Pilates independently. For instance, you start with just the Mat and Functional Anatomy module, and add on the Reformer module the following session, or you can do what most students do, which is do all the modules in sequence for the complete Pilates training. Mat and Functional Anatomy is the prerequisite for all other modules. You can mix and match modules from the two structures (Classic 5-month and The Accelerated August Modules); both structures share the identical breakdown of hours required for each module as follows:
Mat & Functional Anatomy Module
36 hours instruction, 12 hours observation, 70 hours self-practice, 120 hours practice teaching
Reformer Module
36 hours instruction, 30 hours observation, 70 hours self-practice, 120 hours practice teaching
Pilates Springboard Module
12 hours instruction, 10 hours observation, 30 hours self-practice, 60 hours practice teaching
Designed by Ellie Herman, the Pilates Springboard is an inexpensive and space-saving alternative to the Cadillac. It contains: roll back bar, leg springs, arm springs.
Cadillac and Wunda Chair Module
24 hours instruction, 20 hours observation, 50 hours self-practice, 100 hours practice teaching
Cadillac repertoire will cover push-thru bar and trapeze. You must take the Pilates Springboard module to complete the full Cadillac repertoire.
Other Fees and Expenses
Studio Use Fee: $600/year or $100/month.
Group Testing: $200 per module; $250 for Full Program; $390 for Full Program testing and Reviews. Testing can be done remotely by video.
Suggested Materials: Pilates Props Workbook and Taking Root to Fly
Required Materials: Anatomy of Movement, Muscles Testing and Function, and all EHS teacher training manuals

3 STRUCTURES TO CHOOSE FROM TO DO YOUR TEACHER TRAINING
Teacher Training in SF and Brooklyn
Winter Modules are taught in intensive weekends with one weekday evening, for six weeks in a row. Self-practice hours with a partner will be scheduled during the six-week period and will continue for the following year followed by student teaching hours. Assistant Teaching for Mat, Springboard and Reformer classes will also be scheduled with certified trainers and will continue throughout the year. You can choose to do one or any combination of modules and mix and match with the August Super Intensive modular choices, (i.e. some people opt to take just the Mat and Functional Anatomy module in August and then return the following year for the Reformer and other modules).
OR
3-week accelerated August modules in SF
The Accelerated SF August Modules
The accelerated modules are designed for highly skilled Pilates students with a keen grasp of the Pilates repertoire and concepts. The pace is extremely fast; mental and the physical endurance is a necessity. Self-practice hours and student teaching hours follow the 3-week pedadgoical portion. Visiting students can do these hours at their home studio. You can choose to do one or any combination of modules in August and mix and match with the Classic 5-month modular choices, (i.e. some people opt to take just the Mat and Functional Anatomy module in August and then return the following year for the Reformer and other modules).
Personalized Teacher Training
This is a self-structured and flexible teacher training that can be done at any time of the year, and can be done in modules, or all at once. This choice makes sense for visiting students who are not be able to make the others dates, or for any student who desires a one-on-one learning experience. The requirements are the same as the other teacher training choices, but students receive private training instead of group training, and the price will reflect this. Contact the studio to arrange a personalized teacher training and to find out if it makes sense for you.
PREREQUISITES FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE TEACHER TRAINING
The goal of our certification program is to give gifted students the skills and techniques to become qualified Pilates Instructors. It is not appropriate to consider applying to this program if you have little or no Pilates experience.
* You should be in excellent physical condition, and have few limitations or injuries (this is for your own safety).
* We require a minimum of 2 years movement experience: Pilates, dance, yoga or related exercise.
* An audition or evaluation is required, and any exceptions to the prerequisites can be discussed at that time. Additional prerequisites may be assigned in order to get the student ready for the rigors of this training program.
PLUS
EHS Pilates Immersion (offered at EHS every June and September in SF and September only in Brooklyn), is an 8-week mini intensive specifically designed to get students ready for the teacher training. This is the most affordable way to get your pre-requisite hours done.
OR
30 hours of private Pilates instruction at EHS plus 15 mat class hours
OR
40 hours private Pilates instruction at EHS
